Sports What Ifs.

1984 NFL Draft - The Chicago Bears pick Steve Young in the 9th round despite his USFL contract.
- The pick generated some controversy, and Young stated he would honor both the USFL contract, but should the USFL fold, he would play for the Bears.

- In 1985, Young is a backup to Jim McMahon and Steve Fuller. During the Bears' Super Bowl XX win, he was beloved by Bears fans for calling a time-out that led to the drive that had Walter Payton scoring the last touchdown of the Bears' 53-10 victory.

- In 1986, Young takes over for McMahon after the infamous Charles Martin slam - he leads the Bears to win Super Bowl XXI over the Denver Broncos by a 47-20 score. Young would be the Super Bowl MVP.

If Young takes over for an injured McMahon, and wins a Super Bowl, then McMahon is going to be traded in the off-season because the McCaskey's weren't a big fan of him.

Maybe McMahon is traded to the Colts for Gary Hogeboom and a fourth-rounder.

Then, in the 1987 draft, I don't see the Bears drafting Harbaugh since they have Young. The Giants (who lose to the Bears in the NFC Title Game in this world) pick 26th, and they take Ricky Nattiel. Then, after the Broncos take CB Nate Odomes (Louis Wright just retired), the Bears take S Tim McDonald with the 28th pick (Gary Fencik was on the verge of retirement).

What if The Habs acquired Cam Neely for Mike McPhee in 1985?

The Habs won the cup in 1986, and maybe they knock off the Flyers in the 1987 WCF before losing to the Oilers.

-What if Cam Neely was traded to Philadelphia in 1985? Does the Flyers win the cup in 1987? Does the Lindros-Era Flyers actually gets some much needed depth? In fact, if the lindros deal never happens and the flyers keep Duchesne, Ricci, Simon, Yushkevich, Hextall and Peter Forsberg along with still acquiring Brind'amour, Leclair, Desjardins and Svoboda along with Neely already in place, does the 90s Flyers win the cup around 95-97?

Who was going to be traded for him? If they don't give up much, Neely could help them against the Oilers (he had 36 goals and 36 assists that year for the Bruins).

Right now, I am watching Bronx Zoo 90 about the disasterous 90 Yankee season, and how a dynasty was born from the ashes of that season.

However, there were several things that had to happen. For example, if Steinbrenner isn't suspended, then Gene Michael and Buck Showalter don't come in and start the turnaround.

Then, if there wasn't a 1994 strike, and the Yanks end up in the WS, maybe Showalter isn't fired in 1995, and Torre isn't hired (that was a key component. He dealt with Steinbrenner better).

And, even after getting to the first WS in that era, if Leyritz doesn't hit the three-run homer in Game 4 of the 1996 WS, and they lose that game (and the WS), maybe Torre is fired the next year (if they still lose to Cleveland in the division series), and the dynasty still doesn't happen.

Joe.
Torre was on the hot seat at the start of 1998 if I recall. I think it likely that Buck Showalter, if he goes to the World Series in 1994, simply lasts a few more years and is fired with Torre bBeginning 1998 in the same way Casey Stengel began 1949. Then he just lasts until he retired like he did.

The more important component is them not trading away Jeter, Rivera, etc.

I didn't know about this one.

I am looking at old issues of my hometown paper on Newspaper Archive from 1973. Apparently, in February of that year, there was an article that talked about how a New Jersey corporation was going to buy the Chapparals and move them there.

The article also said that the team was going to play out of the Jersey City Armory until the Meadowlands complex was supposed to be done around 1975 (actually, the stadium wasn't ready until 76).

If that actually happened, you butterfly away the San Antonio Spurs, who would go on to be one of the most successful teams in the NBA.

I wonder if the deal got nixed because the Chaps franchise and the Nets (who were playing on Long Island, and were known then as the NY Nets) couldn't work out compensation (one of the conditions for moving).
